Sagri - Temple of Dimitra - Olive Tree - Panagia in a Cave - Bazeos Tower - Sagri
This route provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience to visit some of the most important sights of Naxos:
The temple of Dimitra, located at Sagri, built at around 530 B.C. and is considered one of the most well preserved ancient buildings of the ancient world (and one of the few in Greece) holding more than 50% of its original building material
The Old Olive Tree (Gerontoelia in Greek) which is considered to be the most ancient olive tree in the world, with a calculated age between 5-6000 (yes thousands!) years old.
The Bazeos Tower, a 17th century castle that acted as a monastery of the True Cross. Now, fully renovated at the beginnings of 2000 is a well known monument open to the public hosting every summer a number of cultural activities.
The route is split in two parts:
A short route, that starts from Sagri with intermediate stops in the church of St Nikolaos and the temple of Dimitra and stops at the Old Olive Tree Distance: 4km, Difficulty: easy, Duration: 2 hours, Elevation: +50m
The complete route, that continues to the church of “Panagia in a Cave”, follows the Bazeos tower and ends again at Sagri Distance: 9km, Difficulty: medium/ hard, Duration 4 hours, Elevation: + 200m
